Copy-editing and proofreading

In the publishing world there is a difference between copy-editing and proofreading.  The copy-editing is done first to correct errors of spelling, grammar and punctuation and also to think about style, structure and accuracy.

Then the pages are typset and proofreading, literally, is checking typeset pages - the proofs - against the original to make sure no typesetter errors have crept in and to catch any writer or editor mistakes that might have slipped through the net.

Much of the work entrusted to Services to Writers isn't like that (though we can do it if that's what you need).  Students, businesses, voluntary organisations and writers seeking freelance help are usually looking for a combined service.  So you can ask us to read your text to

·                    catch errors of

o       spelling

o       punctuation

o       grammar

o       word usage

o       typing

o       numbering

o       heading style

o       capitalisation

·                    ensure consistency of style and word choice

·                    check against your house style or develop your own style guide for you

·                    clear up ambiguities and eliminate repetition - making sure your text is clear and concise

·                    if it's an academic paper ensure all your references and footnotes are there and in the right format

·                    if necessary work with you to reorganise and rewrite your manuscript to ensure it's

o       logical

o       accurate

o       complete

o       appropriate for its intended audience

Just tell us when you call or email to discuss your project what you want to achieve and we'll try to do it.
